The Band under Bryn's direction became Welsh Champions in Section 4 and 3 respectively for four years running. Bryn's greatest achievement happened in September 1999 when he led the band to 3rd place in the 4th Section at the National Finals of Great Britain in Nottingham. In fact Nicky Childs came up to him after the band had played and told him that the band was the best out of the first 10 on stage. As it happened there were another 10 bands to go. As well as obtaining prizes in Local Contests the band also gained 1st Prize at the Welsh National Eisteddfod at Pencoed in 1999 and again at Llanelli in 2001. Following this, Bryn took the band to first place in the 3rd Section at the Welsh Regional Contest in 2002. Bryn suffered several heart attacks and had a triple bypass operation. He once suffered a heart attack on stage while conducting the band at Treorchy. He didn't tell anyone what had happened until the results (another 1st Prize) were announced. He then asked his wife Vera and son Richard to take him home as he didn't feel well and then ended up in hospital. Bryn, above all else was man of brass and will be sadly missed, not only be his family and members of Blaenavon Town Band but by everyone involved with bands in South Wales. If there are Brass Bands in heaven then without a doubt Bryn has the baton and is leading them to victory.
