Monday 23rd July 2007 Lewis family remember Horace The family of former player Horace Lewis made a very generous donation to the band tonight my presenting the band with a cheque for £1000. Horace's son David Lewis and daughter Joan Gough were at the band room to present the cheque to band officials.
The band was such an important part of Horace's life that the family decided to make this kind donation to help preserve the memory of Horace. Horace, who passed away a few years ago was a Bass player with the band throughout the 1950's and 1960's. A larger than life character, he had been an amateur boxer in his youth before becoming a central figure in the band. Many residents of Blaenavon might remember him as he always played the bass drum on armistice day and during carnival parades. His son, David Lewis, remembers his father bringing the whole band back to their house for drinks, even when his son was in the tin bath in front of the living room fire! |
